The Insider: Doree Shafrir

As photographed by Winnie Au

If you took a gander at Doree Shafrir’s resume, you’d be blown away by how cool it is. Wedged between impressive editorial gigs at RollingStone.com, The New York Observer, and Gawker, there’s the killer site she created, Postcards From Yo’ Mama (that, duh, became a book), the Important Stories she’s written for New York Magazine, and a much-loved personal blog. She also happens to have a thing for pieces by the sorts of on-the-verge designers we feature right here on this very site. nathalie

Q: What’s one thing you really believe in splurging on?

A: I don’t buy a lot of jewelry, so when I do, I think about it a lot. I love All for the Mountain. I have the ring that was on the Of a Kind blog in November. I bought it twice—I bought it and lost it and then bought it again.

Q: Is there a kind of piece you can’t seem to stop yourself from buying?

A: Shoes. Sorry to be totally predictable. Rachel Comey shoes and No. 6 shoes are my weaknesses of life.

Q: What fashion blogs do you read every day?

A: My number one favorite fashion blog is my friend Elizabeth Spiridakis’s, White Lightning. I just love her. I love her voice, and I love the things she writes about. She has amazing taste and amazing style. We went to Portland together last summer, and I bought this long Hawaiian dress. She was like, “You could have this shortened, and it would be really cute.” I said, “Oh my god—you’re right, and I never would have thought of that!”

Q: What’s your favorite Of a Kind edition?

A: It is definitely the Dusen Dusen backpack. I carry it almost every day. It fits so much stuff! I feel like it’s made me less slouchy. Backpacks are so much better for your back.

Meet other people we sweat right over here.
