Lulu Frost

image

If the line Lulu Frost had a slogan, it would be “in with the old, out with the new.” Turning glimmering finds from the Titanic era into attention-grabbing earrings and stand-out necklaces worn by, well, a high percentage of Met Ball attendees, Lisa Salzer has one of those storied beginnings. After spending her childhood traipsing around her grandmother’s estate-jewelry shop, Lisa unveiled her first designs—made from repurposed Plaza Hotel room numbers—while wrapping up her art history degree at Dartmouth, she cold-called Barneys, and they bought everything.
Breathing new life into lost keys, shoe buckles, buffalo coins, and antique crystal, Lisa, who’s been at it since 2004, is now a genuine powerhouse—she has collaborated with the likes of J.Crew, Alexander Wang, and Chris Benz and has earned the sort of following that gets her work in the pages of Vogue on the reg. “It took me awhile to get my courage up to start cutting and breaking down old jewelry, honestly, because it was so precious to me,” Lisa explains. “But now, I have a different viewpoint on it. I love to make it into something fresh and new.” —carlye wisel

Next Level: White Sandals

Nothing wrong with black or tan, but the neutral sandal of the summer is white. End of story. And the amazing thing about it is that it doesn’t look neutral when you’re wearin’ it at all—especially if you get yourself a (fake) tan or are lucky enough to have legs that are not naturally the color of bread dough. —erica

LEVEL I: Wearing this K. Jacques pair will make you feel like a little French girl in St. Tropez.

LEVEL II: Somehow, in white, these Belle by Sigerson Morrison flats look subtle, despite all their detailing.

LEVEL III: The loops on the back of these Alexander Wang guys make it easy to carry them when you slip them off to dig your toes into the sand.

LEVEL IV: Oh, just a sandal bootie. No big thang—this is just how Camilla Skovgaard rolls.

There’s more “Next Level” where this came from.

Weather Vain: Phoenix, Arizona

Right about now is the perfect time to be in Arizona, no? I mean, I don’t actually know this, but it seems right: The days are warm but not hot, and the nights call for a jacket. Here’s what I’d wear in my little Phoenix fantasy world. —erica

Clockwise from top left:

+ This easy, breezy Edun dress is pretty much all-season around these parts, with thin sweater or woven scarf tossed on top when necessary.

+ Keep it simple with a slim cork wristlet from Rag & Bone. Pairs nicely with a glass or three of wine at Postino.

+ You gots to have your shades, man, and this Raen pair is Hunter S. Thompson loud but still supremely classic.

+ Kora’s leather-wrapped horn bangles can hang in Scottsdale.

+ This beige suede jacket from Alexander Wang wards off the desert chill during your long-ass wait at Pizzeria Bianco.

+ Yes, they are spike earrings, but Gretchen Jones knows how to make them a surprise.

+ Because K. Jacques knows you need a POC (pop of color, duh).

Weather Vain: Boston, Massachusetts - 41 and Mostly Cloudy

If you’re spending your day in Beantown, wandering Fort Point or hanging in Cambridge, here’s what you should wear. You know, in my humble opinion. —erica

Clockwise from top left:

+ A Hope wool coat that will keep you just warm enough for walking Charles Street.

+ Suede pants can do East Coast prep—especially these Current/Elliott ones with their jean-esque cut and rusty maroon hue, just two notches left of neutral.

+ In these comfy, gum-soled Belle by Sigerson Morrison puppies, you could take on the Freedom Trail if you so desired.

+ A hit of neon—here, in the form of a T by Alexander Wang sweater—goes a long way.

+ You might have to loosen this Lizzie Fortunato belt after a few scoops from J.P. Licks.

+ These diamond earrings—from Blanca Monrós Gómez just for Of a Kind!—are the same color as your fave cocktail at Drink.

In Character: Daria Morgendorffer

Daria didn’t give an F what she looked like…except you know that she secretly did. And she managed to pull together an ensemble that conveyed to the Kevins and Brittanys of the world (and the Beavises and Butt-heads, too) that, no, high school in Lawndale was not doing it for her. Here, three pieces as droll as her commentary. —erica

An earthy, zip-front cardigan from Rodarte for Opening Ceremony with enough bulk to compensate for Quinn’s exposed midriff.

A pleated black Alexander Wang skirt that screams “cynical schoolgirl”—extra-long in the back so no one gets the wrong idea.

Combat boots from LD Tuttle to wage a war on suburban stupidity.

A Case for…Snakeskin

Now, don’t go thinking all crazy-like: Leopard’s not going anywhere. But that doesn’t mean its slithery friend/foe/frenemy—how exactly do wild cats and snakes think of each other?—doesn’t deserve play, too. Bonus points: Wear two of these five pieces at once. Dare you. —erica

1) Dieppa Restrepo lady boot: In case you haven’t met a boot you can legit wear year-round…well, I’d like to introduce you.
2) Alexander Wang thin double belt: It’s like Dita Von Tesse in accessory form: ladylike and perverse at once.
3) Parker snakeskin print pants: High-waisted and slouchy with elasticized ankles—#manrepeller.
4) Meredith Wendell Grasshopper bag: Oh, hey! It’s an Of a Kind edition! Alternative name: Snake in the Grass.
5) Pendelton Meets Opening Ceremony snake maxi skirt: Something about this number screams GET IN MY CLOSET RIGHT NOW.

But wait! There’s more! Check out the backlog of cases made.

Interior Inspiration: Mama Shelter

When you visit Paris, you’re supposed to fall in love with a charming nine-room hotel just next door to a boulangerie, but when I visited last summer, I was super psyched on Mama Shelter, a clubby sort of place in the 20th that I probably would despise if it was in NYC. Somehow, mood lighting and graffiti décor are far less grating in France. This little look is inspired by the place’s vibe. And! Also! For more travel-y things I’m into, go to Jauntsetter (and sign up for a chance to win our Symmetry Goods scarf!). —erica

1) A nearly blinding neon yellow Shipley & Halmos dress that would look so great with neutral accessories.
2) Clunky wood wedges by Minimarket, a stand-out Swedish line.
3) A necklace from Digby & Iona made to look like a tree stump—you can have it custom engraved with initials and hearts, if that’s your thang.
4) A cape-slash-blazer by Alexander Wang that’s fit for a superhero.

In Character: Kate Moseley

Figure skating isn’t exactly known for a minimalist aesthetic, but Kate Moseley, a girl who knew how to get what she wanted (see: gold medals, Doug Dorsey), gave the sport’s bejeweled bodysuits and wispy skirts some polished, don’t-mess-with-me attitude. And now I have to stop before the temptation to use cutting-edge as an adjective gets the best of me. —erica

A sophisticated (and not too glitzy) leotard by Opening Ceremony—a line that’s as Olympic-focused as she is.

A little skirt from Torn by Ronny Kobo that really works a side-by-side double.

A bulky Alexander Wang turtleneck sweater in a hue as icy as the tone used to say, “Toe pick!”

In Character: Miranda Priestly

Fashion week is fast approaching…and I feel like a total a-hole typing that. REGARDLESS, I’m taking this opportunity to pay tribute to our favorite editor—a woman who knows how to get what she wants and who dresses like she’s never owned a pair of sweatpants in her whole life. Also, while we’re here: Who does Andy Sachs think she is walking into a Runway interview having never read the publication? What is this, amateur hour? —erica

An icy Alexander Wang trench—if you’re never exposed to the elements, you can do white outerwear.

Bejeweled hoop earrings by Dannijo that nicely frame a clenched jaw and narrowed eyes.

Pleated Apiece Apart trousers—so everyone knows who wears the pants around here.

In Character: Audrey Horne

Though most of Audrey Horne’s clothing would have fit right in at a sock hop, the Great Northern heiress managed to exude quite a vampy aura. In below-the-knee skirts and Peter Pan collars, she had a sort of Audrey-Hepburn-gone-bad thing going on that made every arched eyebrow seem far more diabolical than it really was. —erica

A snug brick-red sweater from T by Alexander Wang—perfect for catching (and holding) Agent Cooper’s attention.

No. 6 shoes that really sell that whole innocent schoolgirl thing.

A full, plaid Billy Reid skirt that only looks provocative if you know how to move your hips just so.
