5 of the Cool (and Totally Unlikely) Things Shani Pak Collects

The Little Mermaid would be super-jealous.

You want thingamabobs? She’s got 20. “I’m a huge collector—I love the idea of being able to make something into something else—there’s an element of magic there,” says Shani Pak, the brainiac behind the very industrial-cool jewelry line Metonym. For her, that means amassing not vintage necklaces or old-school magazines but rather objects that are beautiful in their utility. Check out five things she stockpiles. —carly pifer

Vintage compasses
“The largest one to the left is my father’s. Something about precision-tooling is super-sexy.”

image

Vintage dental bits
“These sanding tips are giant compared to the ones that are used today in the dental offices. Imagine that!”

image

Music boxes
“My father gifted me music boxes growing up. I love how the metal mechanics make music.”

image

Traditional Japanese tools
“Ikebana flower frogs are Japanese tools used in flower arrangements. The frogs are not obvious tools, but then they are—they enable flowers to stand upright. This traditional coal chopstick kind of transcends our lifetime because we don’t often pick up hot coals anymore, but I appreciate how it’s precision-made and solid brass.”

Containers
“I love how boxes are containers for curiosities. You never know what you may find in one. Also, I love the constant, simple form of a box and the different materials from which one can create a box.”

You’ll want to add Shani’s edition to YOUR collection. Get it tomorrow.

Personal Shopping: What We’re Looking to Score from our Collections Designers

Have we told you how excited we are about Collections? Oh, we have. Right. But, we’re, like, wish-listing the crap out of it—true story. Here are the things that are on the tippy-top of our lists from each of the four featured designers.

K/LLER COLLECTION

image

Erica: “So, I just chopped my hair off (again), and I’m kind of obsessed with the idea of big earrings—but ones that don’t feel too glitzy-dangly, if you know what I mean. Basically, these brass ones, in a nutshell.”

image

Claire: “I’ve been contemplating trying to bring back the hoop earring for awhile now. (I refused to leave the house without them from 2000 to 2002.) These ones feel less Christina Aguilera-esque than the ones I wore in high school—which is a good thing.”

Eayrslee

image

Erica: “I don’t wear a lot of colorful clothes—but I DO heart a colorful bag. The blue, textured flap on this one is so enticing. And seasonless!”

image

Claire: “I go nuts for a good cardholder and this little guy is perfect for holding my ID and my metrocard—both of which are way too hard to find if I put them in a wallet with all the other stuff.”

Dusen Dusen

image

Erica: “Ah, tights—I’m already sick of ‘em. This winter, I vow to wear pants more often. Ideally these pants, with a black turtleneck sweater.”

image

Claire: “I’ve been on a real navy kick lately, and I’m especially loving it paired with black. I’m dying to wear this super easy little number with black tights and booties—and maybe a necklace layered under the collar?”

Ace & Jig

image

Erica: “When you throw on this dress and a big, chunky necklace, it looks like you tried. But, see, you didn’t at all. That’s the dream, in my mind.”

image

Claire: “I can’t stop thinking about this plaid skirt. The color combo is so freaking good and keeps it from feeling too much like a catholic-school uniform.”

Check out all the Collections goodness up for grabs.
