Next Level: Lapis

image

We’re seeing lapis a LOT right now, and you know what? We think that’s a good thing. It has this fly night-sky quality, ya know? Get into it. —erica

LEVEL I: This Grace Lee ring would absolutely distract from a smudged manicure.

LEVEL II: Put on this Kathryn Bentley necklace, and it really doesn’t make a difference what else you’re wearing.

LEVEL III: Who says your ears have to be twins? Definitely not Mociun.

LEVEL IV: Fun with negative space! Thanks to this slicker-than-slick A Peace Treaty pendant.

"Next Level" madness—it’s happening over here.

Maybe if you wore this Grace Lee charm around your neck, you’d remember to put your clothes away? Wishful thinking, I know. —erica

Grace Lee Designs

image

Los Angeles-based jewelry designer Grace Lee doesn’t really take no for an answer. Accept, as evidence, the story of her signature lace ring: When Grace was cooking up her spectacularly unique design, which looks a whole lot like its namesake material in sturdy metal, manufacturers shook their heads incredulously. “No way!” one told her. “It won’t work,” said another. But Grace plodded on, asserting that she would bring this thing to life. Slowly but surely, impossible turned into unlikely, unlikely into maybe, and maybe into success.

Grace credits this go-get-‘em attitude to her lack of formal jewelry schooling—she comes from a background in finance and didn’t pick up her accessories skills from anyone in particular. She got her start creating custom engagement rings for friends and fangirls—a first love she still devotes as much time as possible to—and, in all of her work, she puts an emphasis on practicality, versatility, and timelessness. But make no mistake: Grace designs pieces that are utterly special, just built to last—in hopes that daughters and granddaughters can one day inherit some really rockin’ jewelry. —dana covit

Clare’s L.A. Designer Posse

This handbag genius is a member of a gang of pretty ladies who make killer clothing and accessories—and give the West Coast major street cred.

From left, designers Annie Costello Brown, Melissa Coker, Jesse Kamm, and Clare Vivier (wearing a Jesse Kamm dress!) with Heather Taylor of Taylor De Cordoba gallery.

Like the food, the fashion scene in Los Angeles is organically grown. “L.A. has a real undertone of cheesiness, so when the city tries to put on fashion week or something like that, it usually just turns bad. But a lot of creative and cool people live here! We all help each other out and collaborate,” explains Clare Vivier, she of the cultish and minimalist bag line. “When you’re willing to help others and they’re willing to help you, suddenly you’re not on this little desert island.” These are the designing women she hangs with—and whose work she wears.
