A Case for…Will McGinn, Personal Stylist

The person you see above is my friend, the completely delightful Nick, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday. The last couple of times we hung out Nick showed up wearing those barefoot running sneakers with the vibram toe things that make you look like you have frog feet. And he’s not even a runner.

I guess Nick decided to give himself a Christmas present this year, because over winter break he reached out to my friend-because-of-tumblr, Will McGinn, of Except For This One, to ask for some help with his look.

I hadn’t seen Nick since his makeover, so I was blown away when he showed up on Saturday rocking selvedge jeans,  chambray shirt, black cardigan, argyle socks, wingtips, and a tweed blazer (not pictured). As he tells it, it only took two sessions with Will to effect this kind of transformation. At the first, Will made him throw away a bunch of things from his closet (Nick hid the toe sneakers because he “likes them too much”), and for the second, Will chaperoned Nick on a shopping trip.

If your man needs a new steez (for Valentine’s Day, perhaps?), I can’t recommend Will’s services enough. —claire

PS. Guess what else? We have a men’s edition coming up the week after this one. Also in time for Valentine’s day. So basically, we’ve got you covered for the Hallmark holiday: an Of a Kind edition + a session with Mr. McGinn = golden girlfriend.

I guess it’s Victor/Victoria day here on Of a Kind. Also as good on boys as on girls: BRIEFCASES! I do love a modern man with a briefcase, but a girl carrying one is sassy and adorable.

By Hlaska, whose name is a blend of Hawaii and Alaska (duh)—apparently, Hlaska, the 51st state, is “a state of mind, yet a true frontier.” Okay! I buy that. —claire

I’m really drawn to everything by Folk, a U.K. star that will be getting big love in the U.S. any minute now. All of the designs could be soooo dorky…but they’re not at all.

Burkman Bros. reminds me of that way J. Crew clothing used to look on the coolest boy in junior high—you know, the super lanky one with the dimples who didn’t yet know how good his hair was?
