Next Level: Rust

Today’s post is brought to you by the color rust—the sort of hue you only get your hands on if you throw it down for a Crayola 120-pack or pony up for one of these pieces. —erica

LEVEL I: God knows we love a fashion sweatshirt, and this MHL by Margaret Howell one will keep your white jeans in play well into the fall.

LEVEL II: Sessun = the king of the Frenchie dress.

LEVEL III: A cropped flare is a wee bit tricky, but by opting for this color, you’re making it clear that you’re really going for it with your Mother Denim.

LEVEL IV: Yes, this Haider Ackermann coat is loud, but it’s also so classy that you’ll want to drop off your dry-cleaning and shine your shoes.

Now, here’s something impressive: The French label Sessun has the power to make this getup seem completely approachable. —erica

How prim and proper is this Sessun look? But then, you know, not at all? —erica

Known Entities: Laura Ingalls Wilder

The author of the Little House books (and the series’s main character) wrote about clothes a lot more than one would expect a woman growing up in the Midwest in the 1870s to. She had a real appreciation of fabric, cut, and craftsmanship that we can  get behind, and her love of food didn’t hurt things, either. —erica

A versatile dress in a special material Ma scored on a rare trip into town. / Like: Sessun Harmony dress

A cozy wrap-slash-blanket for especially frigid nights (or when the firewood is running low). / Like: Lily and Jae Becker blanket

Boots suited for one of her favorite pastimes: chasing around an inflated pig bladder. / Like: LD Tuttle The Cross boots

In Character: Mallory Keaton

Mallory Keaton may have been overshadowed by Alex P. in the brains department, but no one outshone her when it came to fashion. The tumblr Mallory’s Clothes has been painstakingly documenting every outfit Justine Bateman wore on Family Ties, and now that it’s fall I can’t wait to start dressing like Mallory: lots of cute plaid shirts, high-waisted jeans with skinny belts, and just-this-side-of-sexy sweaters. Maybe I’ll even bring back poufy bangs for a day. —doree shafrir

A Sessun double-breasted top with interior plaid detail looks cozy and autumnal. Wear it with corduroys, and you’ll look like you just came from French class. (Available at Steven Alan.)

A slouchy Madewell sweater shows off just the right amount of collarbone—and comes in five colors.

Pair this silk Lover blouse (available at La Garconne) with these high-waisted Acne jeans and a skinny belt (available at American Apparel) for Mallory’s preppy-with-a-twist look.

Of course, you’ll have to find a Skippy for yourself.

In Character: Samantha Parkington

All of the American Girls were pretty stylish, but Samantha, the now-discontinued* Edwardian mini-suffragette, was damn posh, too. She made me want thick bangs, wide satin ribbons, and a tiny, $34 mohair bear (named Teddy for the president, obviously). —erica

A high-neck, long-sleeve Lover dress—worn with thick tights, because showing even a tiny patch of skin would be tacky. (Available at Jumelle.)

(Fake) fur accessories help make a plaid Sessun cape significantly warmer. (Available at Penelope’s.)

Because bows and Mary Janes are both integral to the look, Marais USA flats that deliver both.

*Apparently, in 2008, Pleasant Company decided to start retiring dolls. And a year later, Samantha was the first to go. Miss Parkington, I thank you for 23 years of fine service.
