Let It Flow: Corinne Grassini of Society for Rational Dress Builds a Fire, Removes a Cork

Sometimes the best drink is the one poured straight from the bottle, and, lucky for us, Corinne Grassini of the thoughtfully edgy line Society for Rational Dress knows exactly which 750 ml containers contain the best fix. Here, her go-to trifecta.

The family wine and winery.

“The best nights in the summer are the ones spent in my backyard, building a fire—yep, cause it gets COLD at night in L.A. in the summer—and having a glass of wine with my boyfriend, my girlfriends, my sisters…whoever is around to enjoy. My top three favorites (please don’t make me choose!) are The Prisoner or Mercury Head, both by Orin Swift Cellars, or the cabernet sauvignon reserve by Grassini Family Vineyards—yep, my awesome sisters run our family’s vineyard in Santa Ynez.” —corinne

Alumni News: Society for Rational Dress Does (Sick) Furniture Now, Too

Corinne Grassini’s line, Society for Rational Dress, is all about melding the soft with the tough (proof: the silky dress, equipped with leather ties, the designer made for us). So it shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that when the designer translated her vision to her recently-launched furniture line, the same aesthetics prevailed. A wooden stool, with leather harnesses, topped with fur? Chunky, architectural vases for those delicate flowers? Kill-ing it. Go on, check it out for yourself. —jiayi

Here I am rocking our Society For Rational Dress tunic as a shirt, with a capital “R” for resourceful (previously: as a dress). And, yes, that’s our Sophie Monet necklace, which basically hasn’t left my neck since we released it. We have meetings all day today and it’s approximately the temperature of fire here in New York. —claire

Four Ways We Rock Of a Kind Editions on Hot, Hot Days

In which we imitate second-rate personal-style bloggers.

We wear the editions we sell on the site. Pretty much daily. Here, four of our favorite hot-weather Of a Kind looks and their IRL scenarios, as styled by Claire and Erica and photographed awkwardly in front of passing crowds by Claire and Erica. —erica

What: Our Veda vest with a Theory tank, J Brand cut-offs that used to be pants, our Sophie Monet necklace, a wooden bangle purchased so many years ago that I can’t believe I haven’t lost it yet and definitely don’t remember where I found it, and Joie sandals picked up in Austin, Texas, at By George after United lost my luggage (lemons/lemonade, etc.).
Where: To poolside parties at SXSWi (the reason for the trip to Austin)—I may have gone for the tech, but I still dressed for the music portion. If I can’t do rocker-chic in Austin, then I’ll never do rocker-chic.

What: Our light-as-linen-cause-it-is Ace & Jig dress with DVF mules, a Levi’s denim vest, our Brvtvs bracelet, and an Alyssa Norton friendship bracelet gifted to me by a friend years before they were a trend (snap).
Where: To that same friend’s rooftop party where there was (predictably) more cheese and dip than anyone should eat—hence the lack of a waistline.

What: Our Society for Rational Dress tunic with a vintage Donna Karan belt from the nineties (handed down from my mother) and a pair of Steven black pumps.
Where: To a serious meeting in midtown (blazer for air-conditioned conference room not pictured). Erica and I had a couple of disastrous days last summer where we tried to do profesh in the heat and ended up looking…sweaty. I got a little giddy when I realized this super-thin piece could transition to business-wear.

What: Our Lizzie Fortunato Jewels necklace with a gold chain of my dad’s, YSL heels (one word: Craigslist), and a dress from Kimberly Ovitz, a designer whose work I had been eyeballing for seasons before finally pulling the trigger.
Where: To a schmance NYC wedding, accompanied by a boyfriend in a vintage Dior tux that he scored on eBay and spilled red wine on almost immediately.

It’s your lucky week: You can get 25% off every single Of a Kind edition with the code SUMMEROFAKIND—and work your own styling magic.

The Insider: Alisa Gould-Simon of Pose.com on Life “Outside the Fashion Bubble”

Alisa Gould-Simon has covered fashion for the likes of The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. She’s run her own fashion consulting agency, and now she’s director of marketing and communications for Pose.com, an awesome social-shopping site you should probably join. Basically, when it comes to fashion, she knows what’s up, and the longtime New York resident moved to L.A. a year and a half ago. Here, she expounds on the joys of her new locale, like actually having space to entertain and living in flats. Not going to lie—we’re a little jealous. —nathalie

Q: How do people dress in L.A.?

A: No one wears heels in L.A. unless they’re really dressing it up. There’s a relaxed undertone to all the fashion. In a way, it’s disjointed. L.A. is such a sprawling city that the fashion community kind of reflects that—it offers people a lot of space literally and figuratively to be creative, to play, to work outside the fashion bubble.

Q: What’s the fashion scene like socially? Are people close?

A: I have a group of friends—L.A. ladies who are all New York expats who work in fashion. It’s nice, because relationships within the fashion community tend to be really close. Also, because you have more space, people have more domestic gatherings.

Q: Who are your favorite L.A. designers?

A: Definitely Society for Rational Dress. I’ve known Corinne for a while now, and she just has a very interesting take on design in general—architecture and art are big influences. [Ed: Check out our edition from her here.] I’m also really into Tanya Aguiñiga’s stuff. She’s being doing amazing rope accessories. Kelly Bergin’s burgeoning line is a favorite of the rising stars on the L.A. fashion scene. Her work calls to mind both Céline and Helmut Lang. But Bergin’s line also has a chic-yet-effortless bent that feels totally unique…and totally L.A.

Have you been following our L.A. month coverage? Cause you should be.

If you’re already tired of pretty florals and bright corals on June 1, then have we got the summer dress for you. This silk creation by Society for Rational Dress is just as easy to wear as it’s aggressively summery cousins, but the muted pattern and the little leather ties it comes with—click here to see them—give it a moody, slightly complicated vibe. —erica
